Board of Equalization Offers Info About Property Tax Postponement After Fires, Floods, Or Mudslides

California homeowners with damages from the fires, floods or mudslides were offered relief through Property Tax Postponement (PTP) Program. Now, this filing period’s been extended to June 1, 2018. So, if your home was destroyed or damaged, you might still qualify for postponement of your 2017-2018 property taxes. For example, if you need more time to get documents together, the Controller’s staff will give you more time. You’ll need to be approved for the PTP. If approved the Controller’s staff will figure out the property taxes owed based on a reassessment of you property. They’ll let you know when your taxes are due after talking with your county’s tax collector.

This relief is extended to all but one county. It includes Orange County homeowners. If you need more information, just visit the Board of Equalization’s website. Also, call the office at contact the State Controller’s Office at (800) 952-5661 or email postponement@sco.ca.gov directly. They’ll let you know that you have to file a claim with the county assessor either within one-year of the damage or within the time frame specified in your county ordinance, whichever comes later. Also, your damages have to be valued at at least $10,000. If you’ve already applied, but your contact information changed, don’t forget to let them know.
